Commissioned by the governor-general of Korea in 1922 (11th year of the Taisho period). The surviving documents consist of a commission form, lyrics sheet, and a musical score. The 15-verse song depicted scenes on a journey from Busan to the Tokyo Imperial Palace. To familiarize the Korean people with the “mainland” (Japan), the journey included a boat ride to Shimonoseki and then a journey to the Imperial Palace in Tokyo via the Sanyodo/Tokaido road routes. Although the lyrics were obtained through a public contest, the parts of the original manuscript that indicate that the lyricist was “Juichi Kajiwara, teacher at Kyoto Municipal Commercial Training School” have been erased. The music composer was an assistant professor at the Tokyo Academy of Music at the time. |
